#1 Success Factor
Take Your Time Picking a Niche
Take your time! If you rush through this most important step of building a business for yourself, you could waste every next step you take after this most crucial step.
The truth is finding profitable niches can be difficult. Finding one that isn’t extremely saturated can be intimidating when you’re just starting out as an Internet marketer. The key to finding niches that are both profitable and have little competition is drilling down a top-level niche to find profitable sub-niches with fewer competitors.
What is a sub-niche?
Just like a micro-culture is a more narrow, defined, specific culture of a wider, broader, more generic culture; a sub-niche is a more narrow, specific niche inside of a wider, broader niche. The more specific you can be, the more likely you’ll be to bring in targeted buyers. And marketing will be much easier.
For example, let’s say you’re interested in creating a site that has to do with beauty. You’re immediately in the ballpark of literally millions of other competitors, some of those being multi-billion $$ companies. You can drill down inside the beauty category into several different sub-categories. You could choose hair care, skin care, fitness, organic beauty, cosmetics, or any number of niches related to beauty.
But these categories are still too broad to be profitable with small numbers of visitors. You need to drill down further. Let’s say you decide to tackle the skin care demographic. Sub-categories of skin care might include eczema, acne, blackheads, wrinkles, age spots, psoriasis, and dry skin.
Now you have a list of smaller niches that you can begin to narrow down. Acne might still be too broad. You can drill down even more by targeting teenage acne, infant acne, and adult acne.
While you want to find niches that are narrow enough for you to dominate, you don’t want to choose niches that have too little traffic available. Imagine you became so specific that you were only able to reach a few hundred or thousand people, like “15 year old girls with dry skin on their left ring finger.” Something better, but still specific could be “women 16-30 with dry hands.” It’s still very specific and targeted, with many millions of potential customers.
How to Start Research
Don’t be afraid to spy on your competitors. Now, please, don’t steal their work, that’s not what I mean. One of the best things you can do as an internet marketing is see what is working already. Don’t try to create a new niche from scratch, there probably aren’t any buyers.
Go to your favorite search engine, like Google, and search for things like “how to get rid of acne.” This is obviously a niche desperately seeking a solution. If you drill down too much, like targeting “blackheads,” you might find it’s an annoyance, but maybe not something people are desperate enough to spend money solving.
How to Find a Profitable Sub-Niche
This is one of the most popular ways to find profitable niches. and it’s quite easy. That’s because Amazon has basically done the work for you. First pick a very broad niche that interests you
- Browse Departments
- Scroll Down To find your niche
- A list of sub-niche’s will appear
If you have no idea where to start, then use the Amazon search bar. Click where it says “All,” to create a dropdown and find a list of niches you can choose. From there, you can go to the left hand side and start clicking on sub-categories until you find one narrow enough to target easily, yet wide enough to reach a large number of followers.
Let’s do an example together.
Use Huge Review Websites
Once you’ve decided on a very broad niche, type that sucker into google and you’ll find, right away, a website that probably spends tens of thousands of dollars on ads and SEO marketing every day so that they get most of the organic searches.
Once you land on their site, go to the top bar and find one of their sub niches. Click on a few of their posts to see the engagement level, comments, shares, etc. to see if this is a sub-niche that a lot of people are interested in. Remember it can’t be too broad.
Let’s look at another example. Let’s say you’d like to build a review website in electronics. Well that’s obviously way too vague. Let’s try Home Electronics, and we’ll start our google search with “Best Computer for home.”
Without trying very hard, our plan was successful. Simply click the first dropdown, “Best Products,” and we instantly have a few subniches we can build an entire website around, and use it for Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon, or a wide range of other affiliate product ideas.
$1000 Per month Idea
Once you have found an effective means of bringing traffic, the next step is to expand from one of these sub-niches that you pick, and start to branch out into other sub-niches. Make sure you find one great way to drive traffic to your site before you move on to the next thing! Otherwise, you’ll end up with a bunch of great information with no $$ coming in.
Verify Your Ideas with Keyword Research
You should verify that your idea gets a decent level of search volume by using a keyword tool like Google Keyword Planner. If you’re more tech savvy, you can look into some paid options. When you start looking for your new niche on Google, see if there are plenty of AdWords ads on the right sidebar.
If so, this means people are making money in this niche. Any time you can come up with an original slant on an idea that’s already churning profits online, you’re poised for instant success.
